World Cup Round Up Part 1 - Mouth watering week one!

I can only remember three World Cups prior to Brazil 2014, and it is safe to say the South Africa show in 2010 was dire.
Quite possibly the worst show of football I have ever seen (might be a bit far).
However this World Cup has already served up some mouth watering 'soccer ball' as the Americans were calling it last night.
The Neymar show on Thursday following by the RVP and Robben double act on Friday, and then the Andrea Pirlo midfield masterclass on Saturday.
Even the lesser games have been entertaining. Last minute winners from the USA and Switzerland, saying that, they are in the top ten in the world rankings,
However it has been fantastic and has had everything from Muller hat-tricks, poor England defending and Pepe sending-offs (a somewhat regular occurance in professional football these days).
Every week I will be giving my low down on the weeks World Cup antics, unless England make it to the latter stages, then it could be more often, however don't hold your breath!

Kick Off and the Brazilian Supporting Referee -

It was another colourful and somewhat boring opening ceremony that kicked off the tournament last Thursday.
The showpiece of any tournament was followed by the Brazilians getting extremely lucky against a plucky Croatian side with the puppet master Modric pulling the strings.
Marcelo turned into his own net prompting some pretty horrific comments on his twitter, aimed at the wrong Marcelo.
The overrated full back had his blushes spared by the man of the moment Neymar.
I feel kind of sorry for the man as all of Brazil's World Cup hopes pin on his shoulders.
He fired home and was then given the chance from the spot after the referee handed a win on a plate for the hosts to prevent full scale riots erupting in the country. My feeling is it it could be a familiar sight in the next month.

The Reign of Spain is over and Van Gaal can't high five!

The RVP and Robben show as I like to call it occured on Friday night.
The outdated and aging Spain side was humbled by the pacey and slick dutch masters.
Alonso got things off to a rosy start with a penalty, before a top rope WWE wrestling jump saw RVP loop a header over Casillas, truly amazing.
Goals from Robben and De Vrij followed before RVP dealt the fourth blow and Robben put the nail in the coffin.
Running nearly the full length of the pitch, the flying dutchman cut back and slammed home passed the embarrassed Casillas, who had a pretty woeful night.
A joy to watch, but not as good as the RVP/Van Gaal high five.
Lined up for a good 20 metres, for both to basically completely miss.
Needs to be improved before your Old Trafford bow Louis!
 The Flying Dutchman
England were sterling, but humbled by Pirlo and co.

Saturday night was the first time for a very long time I have actually enjoyed watching the three lions.
A breath of fresh air to see Sterling included, arguably the best player on the night.
He shone, as did many of the England players, and I think we really should have grabbed a point.
Sterling's shot appeared to be in, and not until after I was covered with three cans of Fosters did I realise it was still level.
Roy boy's were sharper, faster and looked good going forward, apart from Henderson who seems programmed to do one two's with Jagielka and Cahill.
Pirlo made England look like statues when his dummy set up the first goal, before Rooney showed what he can do as he played a sublime ball for Sturridge to fire home on the half volley.
Not the biggest fan of 'Studge' as the England camp know him, but he took it well.
The winner was frustrating. It wasn't the fact that Baines' defending was poor, but because Super Mario grabbed the goal.
However we did enough for a point, and great optimism for the next two games.
We will get through, I have no doubts.
In other news Glen Johnson is still woefully bad.
 We can still do it!

Red faced Ronnie and the German humbling

Pepe will be needing anger management classes after this one, and having over 10 red cards in his career speaks volumes.
His silly headbutt on Muller set the tone for the 4-0 defeat to Germany last night, but it was Muller who stole the show just like I said he would.
However the betting machine at Coral didn't agree, deciding to discard my 66/1 bet for the German to be the golden boot winner. Instead preferred to scam me with a shout at Lavezzi. Cheers Coral.
 Muller celebrating the Portugal masacre
However the Germans were excellent making the Portuguese looking like pub players.
Muller showed his class, Hummels chipped in, and the Germans showed they are a massive shout to win the whole thing, referee decisions permitting.
Ronaldo looked average, like a child who was picked by his teacher to play in a team with players more suited to a science lab.
Still an unexpected result, and I predict it won't be the last.

Bring on round two!
